Son of Baby Tattooville

October 2 – November 21, 2009

Reception: October 2, 2009, 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

RAM has partnered with independent book publisher Baby Tattoo to present Son of Baby Tattooville, a diverse selection of artists across the spectrum of contemporary art that takes cues from pop surrealism, illustration, graffiti, tattoo culture and lowbrow. Exhibiting artists explore contemporary themes from fantastical imagery to macabre illustrations. Recognizable subjects and hidden references include fine art still lifes, video game culture, science fiction and ecological issues.

The exhibit is being held in conjunction with Baby Tattooville, the groundbreaking limited edition weekend retreat at Riverside’s historic Mission Inn exclusively for artists and collectors. RAM’s opening reception on Friday, October 2nd however is a public event, bringing the art and spirit of Baby Tattooville to the community. The exhibit will feature artwork by Molly Crabapple, James Gurney, Aubrey Kawasaki, Travis Louie, Elizabeth McGrath, Miss Mindy, Buff Monster, Johnny KMNDZ Rodriguez, KRK Ryden, Greg “Craola” Simkins, Philip Warner and Yoskay Yamamoto. Many of the artists previously featured in Baby Tattooville will also be in attendance the night of the opening reception.

The exhibit’s opening reception will feature a special night of events, including figure drawing with Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, hosted by artist Molly Crabapple. Dr. Sketchy’s, which originated in the New York art scene, is now a worldwide phenomenon combining traditional life drawing with elements of burlesque. The event is open both to artists and the general public. This figure drawing session will contain nudity and may not be considered suitable for all ages. In addition to Dr. Sketchy’s, Riverside-based artist Jeff Ribaudo will run a fine-art printmaking studio throughout the event demonstrating solarplate and monotype printing with collage and stencil techniques.
