A Celebration of Arts and Architecture

Join the Art Alliance, a Supporting Group of the Riverside Art Museum (RAM), for a day and evening long “Celebration of Arts and Architecture” on Saturday, April 28, 2012 to benefit RAM’s continuing mission to put on thought-provoking exhibits (come see “You Are Breathing In It!” in July), offer high-level adult art workshops (we have workshops lined up with nationally-renowned instructors in Photography, Plein Air, Watercolor, and more) and youth art classes for children of all stripes to flex their creative muscles (check out our Special Art Class for Kids with Autism).

Start the day with a self-guided tour of the artist studios of Helen Bell, Charles Bibbs, Tiffany Brooks, Judy Davies, Paulden Evans, Denise Kraemer, and Marty Tobias from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Then put on your best cocktail or 1920’s attire to wine, dine, and dance the night away at RAM from 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. A live auction of artwork donated by our Studio Tour artists will take place during the Gala, as well as a treasure hunt, a period costume contest, and much more. Tickets for the Studio Tour are $35, $100 for the Evening Gala, or $125 for a combined ticket for both the Studio Tour and the Evening Gala.

The event honors the 110 year anniversary of the career of the art museum's architect, Julia Morgan. Ms. Morgan believed that architecture was a visual art. Having designed nearly 800 buildings, most notably Hearst Castle in San Simeon, she proved herself to be one of California’s premier architects and a true artist.

In the midst of our beautiful city of Riverside, we have a Morgan-designed landmark treasure. Built in 1929 in a unique mixture of Mediterranean and Classical revival styles, the Riverside YWCA on the corner of Lime and Mission Inn incorporated practicality, convenience, and elegant simplicity in an innovative tri-block design.

The building’s distinctive architecture as a work of art in its own right brought it to the attention of the Riverside Art Center in the 1960s. Morgan’s building became the proud home of the Riverside Art Museum in 1967 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.

The building is now home to artists and art lovers as a place to quietly roam and experience the world of art. With quarterly exhibits featuring artwork by the masters as well as up-and-coming contemporary artists, there’s something to pique everyone’s interests and to challenge their perceptions of what art is. Art classes for the young and young at heart alike teach art history and technique.

Join us for this unique celebration of the arts and architecture to help benefit this beautiful and historic building and the art museum within its walls that seeks to bring art to the heart of the community.
