It's time for another summer night under the stars supporting local artists and RAM! Meet up with colleagues, bring a date, or come stag and make new friends!
We have two artists this month who will be bringing art to life right in front of your eyes.
Nickolas Bahula
Nick is an emerging artist who has been making art for over 10 years. He is an Inland Empire native and recently participated in Saturation Fest where his work sold at auction to benefit the local art scene.
Nick's manner mirrors action painting and abstract expressionism. Using powdered pigment that he throws on the canvas dry, he then applies water to force the colors to drip down, creating organic, gravity-based streams.
Throughout the night, visitors can watch an 8-foot canvas transform from white to colorful abstracted landscape.
Rachael Dzikonski
Rachael is a diverse artist, working predominantly with ceramics and photography. She is active in the Riverside community as an art educator and the program manager for the Riverside Arts Council.
Rachael's relationship with ceramics taps into the visceral response she has with clay and the meditative process of the pottery wheel.
During the course of the evening, visitors can watch Rachael in action at her pottery wheel, transforming mounds of mud into beautiful and interesting shapes and objects.
You do not want to miss what we have in store for you, so come on down!

Lucky Dragons concert
With Mad Marionettes and Conscious Summary
July 17, 2010 from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m.
$5 General Admission | $3 RAM Members

"Their songs often build off of a knotty skeleton of tribal beats, with near-New Age washes of synth and hypnotic delicate textures, earning them comparisons to other soundscape-creating bands like Iceland's Sigur Ros."
-- Margaret Wappler, LA Times
Active since 2000 and based primarily in Los Angeles, “Lucky Dragons” means any recorded/performed/installed/packaged/shared/suggested/imagined pieces made by Luke Fischbeck, Sarah Rara, and any sometime collaborators who claim the name. This performance will feature local musicians and artists that create performances connected with DIY artmaking, including Sumi Ink Club whose work with the public is still on exhibit in the Art Alliance Gallery until July 31. Combining homemade instruments, video art, and music composition, a Lucky Dragons performance is a visceral affair featuring audience interaction. Also performing will be Conscious Summary whose use of voice, violin, upright bass, various percussion items and sound manipulation takes their audience on a surreal and lucid musical ride into the unknown. As for the Mad Marionettes, Rich Cane from I.E. Weekly states: "...they shoot their songs up with the frenzied festivity of a ghoulish carnival, mixing various genres of world music with the dirty, biting intensity of jangley punk." So don't miss out on this truly unique musical experience! See you there!

All-new Members' Mini-Show! In past years, RAM has held a yearly members' exhibit to show off the artwork of RAM's talented artist-members and to provide a space for members to sell and exhibit their work. This year marks a first for RAM as we invite members to present work small in stature but big in spirit.
Southern California has a reputation for thinking big, for creating monumental artworks. We're challenging you to create concise, powerful, bite-sized works. The size limitation acts as an equalizer, from abstraction to representation, sculpture to monoprint. Show us your best work. Your artwork may be miniature, but we hope your ambition is enormous.
Guidelines:
- All styles and themes are welcome.
- Each artist may only submit one original artwork, ready-to-hang.
- The piece must not exceed 16 inches x 16 inches, including the frame.
- All participants must be current RAM members.
- Artwork must be hand-delivered to RAM, 3425 Mission Inn Avenue, Riverside, CA 92501, on one of the drop-off dates listed above.
- Artwork is to be picked up on Saturday, September 18, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. You must present your claim card.
Please click here to print out the entry form you will need to have filled out to bring with you when you drop-off your artwork.

UC Riverside's Mosaic presents the first—but certainly not the last—Press Release. Come eat, drink, buy books and zines, and find out about presses you can submit your own work to in the future. Now is the time to mingle with the finest of the I.E.'s local writers, self-publishers, and literary press.

A zine is an "inexpensively produced, self-published, underground publication usually reproduced via photocopier on a variety of colored paper stock." Come learn how to make one with your own art, writing, collage, and more. If you make zines, bring yours to share for the Zine Swap with a special SUMI INK CLUB zine we’ve made here.

-- Gregory Adamson
Gregory Adamson is a local artist and Riverside Art Museum Board member. A performance painter, his studio paintings are held in public and private collections in the United States and in Canada, and his work has been exhibited locally, as well as in Northern California and Japan.
If you are an artist who wants to paint more boldly and expressively, and to overcome your fears of color, bold composition, painting larger, and taking risks, please join Mr. Adamson for a 7-day special artists' cruise to Mexico aboard Royal Caribbean's Mariner of the Seas, departing from San Pedro on November 7 with stops in Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta.
Mr. Adamson will conduct a 3-day, onboard artist's workshop for artists of any skill level on days the ship is at sea from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with a lunch break from noon to 1:00 p.m. During the morning sessions, Mr. Adamson will give a lecture and demonstrate the lesson of the day. The afternoon sessions will be devoted to painting time, during which participants will get plenty of individual guidance and constructive criticism.
On one of the workshop days, Mr. Adamson will give a talk, during which he will discuss his experiences as a painter/performance artist, his working methods, and he will show samples of his work. He will also discuss his approach to art marketing, including successes and setbacks. Workshop participants are welcome to bring their non-painting partners to this talk.
The group will also be able to dine together with Mr. Adamson aboard the ship. There will be plenty of opportunities for everyone to socialize and bond with fellow artists.

PAAR Watercolor Demonstration
Join the Plein Air Artists of Riverside (PAAR) on Wednesday, January 19th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at RAM for a watercolor demonstration by plein air painter and teacher, Sharon Rachal.
A master of pen and ink, watercolor, and oil, the true value of her work is in capturing on canvas or paper the simple beauty of that which is fleeting.
The founder and a current board member of the Yucaipa Valley Art Association, Rachal has displayed her work throughout Southern California in juried and one-woman shows, and is the proud recipient of the Grumbacher Award for best use of color on “Blackie’s Orchard.” Her painting, “Dawn’s Early Light,” an oil of an Oregon barn, is part of the permanent collection at the San Bernardino Museum.
Be here as Rachal shares her artistic expertise in person.
Free for RAM-PAAR members. The $5 for non-members will be applied to the $30 PAAR membership fee should you wish to join after the demonstration.
Please contact Louise Smith at sierraoaks@aol.com for more information.
You are cordially invited to a Special Reception
January 21, 2011
6:00 – 8:30 p.m. Free
Please join us for the opening reception of three exceptional exhibitions:

John Divola, an art/photography professor at UCR, is the recipient of numerous National Endowments for the Arts Fellowships, a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship, a California Arts Council Individual Artist Grant, and other awards. His work has been exhibited at MoMA, New York; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; LACMA, Los Angeles, and in fine art museums around the world. Melding the disciplines of sculpture, painting, and performance art and using photography to document the resulting experience, Divola is credited with spawning a uniquely influential body of work that has pushed the limits of photography as a medium. John will be speaking at 6:45 p.m.

Seattle's own Carlyle Miller pairs poems with their matched abstract drawings. The unadorned simplicity of Miller's imagistic works on paper give viewers two different ways of absorbing and interpreting his cantos. Printed on large format paper and displayed in total for this exhibition, these works suggest they are not one or the other, but more as variations on a familiar theme – notes on a palimpsest, creating a chorus of sight and language. Carlyle will be joining us straight from Seattle.

Floating Worlds is the inaugural exhibition in RAM's newly-designated Bobbie Powell and Ross R. DeVean Permanent Collection galleries. Featuring Asian and Asian-themed works on paper, this exhibition traces and re-examines the evolution of Asian prints and sumi-e "ink-wash" paintings from their traditional ukiyo-e roots to the modern, abstract forms of today's contemporary artwork. Come see this exhibition highlighting Asian-inspired art in conjunction with Riverside’s 1st Annual Asian-Pacific Lunar New Year Festival which will take place on January 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
PAAR 6th Annual 9-day Paint-Out
Held February 19-27, artists will paint in Plein Air by recreating various scenes along the beautiful historic Mission Inn Avenue in Riverside and in surrounding "water" areas as the theme will be Water.
$5000 in cash and prizes will be awarded with a 2-month exhibition to be held after at the Riverside Arts Project.
For more information, contact Event Chair Terry d. Chacon at shacone@aol.com.

Chick Curtis Monotype Workshop
Saturday, May 14, 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Please join me, Chick Curtis, for a day of making art using the monotype process in printmaking.
Sometimes referred to as a printing transfer method, monotype is a fun way to create interesting imagery by applying various inks and materials to a Plexiglas surface and then printing the results onto paper on a printing press. What makes this process so intriguing are the "gifts" that often occur during the transfer, such as the lush and subtle textures that are unique to the monotype method.
Artists will learn several ways to apply inks to the Plexigas using a brayer (roller), stencil, template, and a vairety of mark-making implements, such as brushes, crayons, and scrapers.
Included in the workshop is a brief demo followed by instruction on the use of chine colle and multiple printings on the same piece of art (multiple drops). Artists are free to follow whatever creative path inspires them. I will be a facilitator in that effort.
Inks, plates, palettes, and work areas will be provided by the art museum or the Printmakers Network (PNET). A list will be sent out to participants with the required and recommended items to bring to the workshop. One sheet of printing paper is included (4 quarter sheets at 11"x15"). Extra sheets are $4 each.
Instructor: Chick Curtis
Location: Riverside Art Museum
Price: PNET members: $65 | Non-members: $75
There will be a 30-minute lunch break, so bring a sack lunch. Participant clean up will begin at 3:30 p.m.
Payment is due at sign up. The last day to sign up is Saturday, May 7. The workshop is non-refundable. For more information, please contact PNET's Mary Grinyer at grinyer@charter.net or 951.689.0915

Wednesday, May 18, 6:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Join RAM's Plein Air Artists of Riverside (PAAR) group for a water soluble oil painting demonstration by plein air painter, Chuck Kovacic.
Chuck obtained grants and scholarships allowing him to acquire a BFA in graphic design from the Cleveland Insitute of Art. As an art director, he collaborated on print campaigns for Owens Corning, Ford, National City Bank, and detailed urban revitalization programs for Midwest communities as part of the "Main Street" program for the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Upon leaving the agency profession, he relocated to Southern California where his artistic skills as a restoration expert focused on items associated with pre-1950 merchandising and related antiques. His clients include serious collectors of the genre, as well as prominent auction houses.
Although he had pursued painting as his minor at the Institute, it was only recently that he resumed painting. Rendered in the traditional plein-air style of the Impressionists, his paintings investigate a diversity of subject matter, some of which he shares here.
"The differences of light and foliage are subtleties which continue to intrigue me." These differences are manifest in his recent paintings of Tuscany. He is an artist member of the California Art Club and RAM.
FEE: Free for all PAAR members | $5 admission for non-PAAR members (applicable to the $30 fee to join PAAR) | PAAR members must also be members of RAM | PAAR will be accepting membership fees for both RAM and PAAR at the door

After undergoing a risky operation in 1941, which led to his confinement in a wheelchair, Henri Matisse discovered "une seconde vie", a second life. This new lease on life led to an extraordinary burst of expression. He set about creating cut paper collages, called gouaches découpés. Matisse called it "painting with scissors."

Sponsored by CareMore, this amazing art class is FREE.
Indulge your creativity using Matisse's gouaches decoupes technique. Students will create a cut paper collage a la Matisse in our lovely Julia Morgan-designed atrium. This class will be taught by Nora Unrath, a prominent Riverside artist. A graduate of the Studio Art program at California State University San Bernardino, Nora has over 15 years of experience teaching art. She was one of the "Giant Orange" artists, and has also been involved in painting murals at three Riverside schools.

Critical Praise for Harki Dhillion's Invisible Hands
Spare and direct, Dr. Harki Dhillon's poems in his debut book address a broad spectrum of compelling subjects related to being alive in the 21st century. Wether he's celebrating the mysteries of the devine or of the Universe, lamenting the ubiquitous suffering in the world, or celebrating daily pleasures, his deeply personal poems resonate with pathos. Dr. Dhillon's experience as an eminent surgeon imbues many of these poems with a sense of the fragility and vulnerability of the human body, while they also emphasize our resiliency and capacity to overcome pain and adversity. Feelings of love, despair, desire, remorse, angst, nostalgia, disillusionment, hope, lonliness and joy pervade these poems - reminding us of the heart's complexity and endurance.
- Maurya Simon, Professor Creative Writing University of California, Riverside
Dr. Harki Dhillon has brought us a collection of poetry that leads us through the dangers and wonders of the laid-bare human heart that only one who works closely with the most intimate fibers of our existence, both physical and metaphorical, can do. These poems are daring, yet, gentle in revealing the essence of the mind and soul. This breath suspending theater of poems is a must have for the home collection.
- Professor Ruth Nolan
I find your poetry especially beautiful and pure of heart.
- Carl Miller, Poet
Harki Dhillon's poems touch the heart, inspire and makes one hope the second book is in the works.
- Brenda Lorenzi, Inland Empire Magazine
Three Poems from Invisible Hands
Thanksgiving
The cold. The dark.
The wind. The stars.
The tent.
The dog. The children.
The food.
Thanksgiving.
The fire.
Struggling with the wind
the flaps on the tent
whipping in the wind
tears
in the cold, in the wind
stars so bright. So near,
once every year
natures purges
all urban concerns
on
Thanksgiving.
Total Joint Replacement
I hurt,
I weep,
drowning in
my own tears.
I feel guilt,
not serving my
master well,
they will attack me
with
knife and saw,
burn me, replace me.
They will do it humanely.
I will feel no pain.
It will end
in my sacrifice.
My end will be
for the greater good.
I was active, in pain.
I am no more
but
I can move.
Soulless, I exist.
The Desert Flower
I am parched.
Let it rain,
but
not too much.
I want to flower and bloom,
not die.
2012 Opening Reception
Thursday, January 12
7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Please join us for an opening reception for the ERETAI and IN-PRINT exhibitions at the Riverside Art Museum.
ERETAI, meaning "rowers" in Ancient Greek, is comprised of works by four NY-based contemporary artists, John Beech, Lael Marshall, David Rabinowitch, and Michael Voss. The exhibition seeks to illuminate and expose the invariable shifts in the world of contemporary drawing, painting, and sculpture. Depicting the eclectic nature of contemporary art, the exhibition will include various media and types of art that emphasize form, space, and intuitive process. Meet all four artists during an Artist Q&A panel during the reception.
IN-PRINT: Five Centuries of Prints and Multiples from the Riverside Art Museum features five centuries of prints and multiples with work by Daniel Hopfer, Utagawa Hiroshige, Will Bradley, Brian Eno, Yinka Shonibare, and many more. Guest Curator Margaret Matthews-Berenson has also collaborated with a talented group of student interns from UCR, La Sierra, and Cal State San Bernardino to produce on-demand companion books. Incorporating their knowledge and skill in creative writing and literature, the students have compiled a unique, one-of-a-kind visual guide to further emphasize the beauty and nature of each work represented in the exhibitions. The book includes original works of literature written by each student. Reception will include curatorial talks and readings from the book.
