Summer 2009 Classes and Camps Schedule

Through the Museum Art School, the Riverside Art Museum offers diversified studio art classes and workshop selections for both children and adults. Presented on a quarterly basis, the Museum maintains a balance of traditional and innovative instruction within a small class setting, encouraging comprehensive guidance and maximum attention to student's individual interests and needs. The Museum's frequently changing exhibits and fine art atmosphere add an inspirational quality to each student's learning experience. Please register in advance. Use your Visa, MasterCard, or write a personal check payable to the Riverside Art Museum.

Week of June 15-19

CA PhotoTech: An Introduction to Digital Photography
Peter Phun, Instructor
9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 9 and up, Enrollment is limited to 8 students.
$15 supply fee to be paid upon registration.

This camp will explore digital photography and basic Photoshop techniques. Students will learn how to manipulate images and create greeting cards from the photos they capture in class. Field trips to downtown locations will make it possible to explore a wide variety of subject matter (written parent permission required).

Please bring a 2 GB Flash Drive to transport your photos. The museum will have cameras and computers available. You may use your own camera, but please bring the manual. To work on your own laptop, it must have Photoshop Elements.

Week of June 22-June 26

CB Beginning Drawing Camp

Ages 6 to 9

It’s great to be able to amaze your friends and family with your drawings. Learn basic techniques and use line, shape, and value to create realistic drawings. We’ll use the same principles to experiment with an assortment of drawing media, such as water soluble pencils, oil pastels, charcoal, and ink. Spend the week learning to

CC Drawing Camp

Ages 9 and up

The goal of this camp is creativity, experimentation, and discovery. Learn how line, value, and composition play a part in constructing and developing a work of art. Join the fun and learn a few tricks that can take your drawings from good to terrific.

Week of July 6-10

CD Fabric Arts Camp
Lori Beilby, Instructor
9:30A.M.-12:30 P.M.
Ages 12 years and older, and adults

Explore some traditional methods of fabric manipulation and embellishment such as dyeing, printing, appliqué and stitching. With these techniques, create a wearable piece of art using recycled materials.

Week of July 13-17

CE Famous Artists and Me
Lisa Dymkova-Fuchs
9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 6 to 12

This camp will introduce you to famous artists, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Vincent van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe, Diego Rivera, and Jackson Pollock. We will learn how to observe, use color, and create beautiful pictures relating to the achievements of those artists. This class will be educational and fun , combining visual literacy and hands-on creative experimentation.

CF Jewelry

Ages 10 years and older, and adults

Make gifts for friends and family, learn how to create beautiful pieces of jewelry everyone will admire: bracelets, earrings, and necklaces galore!

Week of July 20-24

CG Science with a Twist and Art Too!

9:30A.M.-12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack
Ages 7 to 12

Have you ever wondered what’s under your feet? Do you think a rock is just a rock? What happens when you plant a seed upside down? Do plants move on their own? Why some flowers really stink? Can you fry an egg on a rooftop? How can you protect our water resources? These are some of the questions we will try to answer. Each lesson will be fol- lowed by an art project tied to the lesson.

Week of July 27-31

CH Puppet Theater

9:30A.M.-12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 7 to 12

From paper and string and all kinds of things we will create magical puppets. There will be a script to write, lines to learn, a theater to build and sets to paint. On Friday, we will give a performance for family and friends! All you need to bring is your creativity and your imagination!

Week of August 3-7

CI Fun with Clay
Melissa Culley, Instructor
9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 6 to 12

Learn to make a variety of objects, toys, and pots. Learn coil and slab techniques using air dry clay. Work with a ceramic artist and learn the ins and outs of creating hand built objects. Let your imagination go wild.

Week of August 10-14

CK Painting Camp

9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 6 to 12

This fun class will include experiments with color and a variety of tools. Some of them will be unusual! For example: rollers or pieces of paper. We will creat a vari- ety of projects, big and small, while sharpening our skills of observation and using our imagination to expand our ideas about art.

Week of August 17-21

CL Sculpture
Lynne Seymour, Instructor
9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 8 and up

Each day we will be exploring sculptural techniques using various materials such as: wire, metal, wood, clay, paper, and recycled materials. Use your imagination to create three dimensional mixed media characters and abstract forms.

Week of August 3-7

CJ Introduction to Manga and Anime Style Drawing

9:30 A.M. to 12:30 P.M. There will be a break, so bring a snack.
Ages 10 and Up

This camp will introduce beginners to the art of the Japanese drawing styles of Manga and Anime. Learn basic design principles and how to use them to draw various characters. Discover how to draw eyes, hair styles, clothes, expressions, poses, and the differences between the shoujo and shounen style.

If you want to learn to draw and paint, this is the class for you! Explore various techniques and mediums, including paint, charcoal, ink and mixed media. Students will be exposed to art history as well as contemporary art work. Exploration and creativity will be stressed. This class may be joined at any time. All supplies will be provided.

C2 Mommy & Me and Daddy Too!

Ages 3 to 10

Parents, remember how much fun you had painting and drawing when you were a kid? Even if you think you can’t draw a straight line, come share this unique and artistic experience with your child! The class allows both children and accompanying adults a chance to create fabulous works of art, including drawings, paintings, and paper sculpture in a fun, creative, stress-free atmosphere.

Visit the enchanting world of the Far East through Japanese Style Anime Art. You will love the exaggeration, expressions and brilliant colors used in this style of art. Learn drawing, inking, shading and coloring techniques from a professional . Use basic shapes and guide lines to help you create exciting characters and creatures, using; ink, watercolor markers, and Brush-Pens. Supplies and study guides are included!

C4 Cartooning Action!

Ages 7 and up

Get your cartoon characters moving! Learn from a professional cartoonist the secrets of how to create motion and action lines for your characters. Use basic shapes and guidelines to make drawing people and animals easy! We’ll cover walking, running, jumping and more. We’ll use ink, markers and brush pens. This class will give you a great start for your action cartoon Art! Supplies and study guides are included!

This class is designed to give students a wide variety of art making possibilities. We may create a mixed media painting for the first lesson and sculpture for the next. The key to this class is experimentation and acquiring new skills and techniques while stretching your artistic wings. Come and learn to create art work that is interesting and unusual. This class may be joined at any time. All supplies will be provided.

Ages 14 years and older, and adults

This class is for beginning artists and for people who want to add to their skills and sharpen their craft. Painting well can be learned, and it can be improved in many ways. We will work on our ability to observe, and we will learn to recognize important, visual elements. Further, we’ll discover how good composition improves your paintings. This class is ongoing and may be joined at anytime. All supplies will be provided.

C7 Painting, Drawing, and So Much More (Formerly Open Studio)

June 25 to August 13, 2009 · 4:00 to 5:30 P.M.

Ages 5 to 9

In this class, we will explore many different ways of making art, including drawing, painting, mixed media and clay. We’ll learn color theory, the elements and principles of design, and get to know some famous artists too. Every week there will be a class project. If students finish early, they can use paints, clay, markers, and oil pastels to create an artwork of their choosing. There is always something fun to make. This class may be joined at any time. All supplies will be provided.
