Rusted junkyard metal blooms in Riverside exhibition

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Be sure to read this article in the Riverside Press Enterprise and check out the video documenting the installation of Rust and Renaissance.
Michael Kalish: Rust and Renaissance video

  • The metal comes from junkyards throughout Southern California, said Kalish, who has a studio in Culver City.

“I couldn’t help, going into the junkyards, but thinking about why they’re there and how lives passed in and out of these cars,” he said. “And as much as I wanted to take something rusted and old and turn it into something beautiful and organic, there was a very visceral sense of loss.”

    Art Walk Print Making Demo

    Friday, August 8th, 2008

    artwalkdemo4

Last night was downtown Riverside’s Art Walk, which takes place each 1st Thursday of the month. Here at RAM, we held a free printmaking demo in the RAM Printmaking Center. Print makers, Chick Curtis and Mary Grinyer presented their printmaking techniques, processes and creativity to the public. Chick and Mary also answered questions and provided visitors with artistic advice. Many visitors enjoyed learning about the printmaking process for the very first time. Artists of different mediums enjoyed learning about the selection of soy based inks and the monoprint method. Both Chick Curtis and Mary Grinyer participated in the Monothon14 event and their works can be seen downstairs in the Member’s Gallery along with other Monothon14 artists until August 16, 2008. This kicks off our new Riverside PrintMakers group and print making open studio. The first meeting of Riverside PrintMakers is on Thursday, August 14, 2008 and will be held each second Thursday of the month from 7-9pm.

Beyond Monotype - With Akua Waterbased Inks

    MARCH 24 - 28, 2008

    Ron Pokrasso

    Instructor: Ron Pokrasso

    Pricing
    • $575 + $50 materials fee
    • A supply list will be sent to all registered participants.

Ron Pokrasso covers a range of creative techniques in the monotype process. Artists will be encouraged to pursue personal vision using monotype as a primary mark-making tool in combination with a breadth of other techniques as necessary and available. The notion of the ‘artist as an inventor’ will be stressed. The hands-on approach is energetic and open.

Modifying inks, multiple plate printing, exploring the limits of paper, collage and built up surface will all be discussed. Use of drawing materials and finishing prints as resolved and complete expressions, including solving issues after printing are aspects of the workshop. Some monotype printing experience is helpful. This is an advance level workshop.
